Stanmore College Logo Re-Make
Stanmore College has asked us to re-design their logo into a brand new one using our creativity. We were not given any specific detail from Stanmore College of what the logo should look like, so we were given pre freedom to create something that would truly represent Stanmore College.
Client Introduction - Stanmore College
Stanmore College is an educational establishment designed for students to study in their desired field. Stanmore College also provides progression opportunities such as apprenticeships and higher level education for adults. Stanmore College aims to create an environment that embraces their community and others needs. They plan on creating a connected campus where students get together and are at the heart at everything they do.
Stanmore College has hired us to rebrand their identity and redesign their logo for their new upcoming campus design. We were given unlimited opportunity to drastically change their identity and make it look unrecognisable compared to their original identity design.
Stanmore College Rebrand Brainstorm
I have thought of some ideas that I can rebrand. These ideas can impact the identity of Stanmore College if designed properly.
We are mainly focusing on rebranding their logo as we have the most experienced with graphic design. We are also going to come up with our own colour scheme that will suit Stanmore College best.
Audience Needs - Research
What does audience mean?
An audience is a group of people that who spectate or participate in shows, theatres or any academic medium. Businesses often use audiences in order to increase the number of clients, which can potentially lead to financial benefits within the business or company.
Target Audience
Our target audience will mainly be secondary schoolers ranging between the ages of 16 - 18 as they are the most likely to finish secondary school and most of them are thinking of pursuing college as their choise of education.
Target Audience Attraction
From personal experience as a 18 year old myself, I tend to be more attached to online media content which can also be a good opportunity for advertisement. I also tend to be more observant towards bright, saturated colors as it really is eye-capturing. Clean, slick designs towards posters or video thumbnails can also be a bonus for attracting attention.
However, I am interested in what other people my age are attracted to when it comes to media advertisement or content.
Target Audience Attraction Research
Most Gen Z are known for their short attention spans and their engagement with aesthetic and interactive content.
Here is a key list of strategies that captures the attention of 16-18 year olds:
Short - form Video Content: Social media platforms have adapted to short form content such as TikTok, Instagram Reels, and Youtube shorts which most Gen Z engage with, this is due to their low attention spans which require <1 Minute promotional videos.
Authentic Content: Gen Z prefers authentic advertisements over polished or over done advertisements. Gen Z prefers a more realistic approach towards advertising by featuring behind the scenes footage.
Interactive and Engaging Content: Content such as polls, quizzes or even challenges are very effective at making Gen Z participate and engage with advertisements.
Memes and Humor: Gen Z loves memes and humor, its a way for them to feel related which can increase trust, much like friendships. The key is to not make memes forced as it seems like the company is trying to compensate for something.
Collaborations with famous influencers/celebrities: Teaming up with influencers or celebrities which align with Gen Z's interests can improve their engagement with advertisements.
Stanmore College - Prototype Logo/Experimental
This is an experimental logo that I've made using Illustrator, I've used the pen tool to colour in the shield and I also used the pen tool to draw out the shield. Then I've added a fancy border I've found on the internet which was free to use.
College Logo research
Curry College Athletics
Im very interested in this logo, not only it looks simple and clean, but it also has a graffiti style to it, making the logo really eye catching. the simplicity of this logo is what makes it so special, I really like the black outline around the letters and also the thin white inner outline, which makes the logo look 3D. I also really love the colour purple used for the fill.
Research
I enjoyed this unit the most as I've gotten the chance to design something of my own and make it look the way I want it to look. This unit would have not been possible without the research that I've done. I've used secondary research the most and started analysing American-style, college football logos and used them as inspiration, I also have researched about Gen Z and found out what content or product design appeals to them the most. Unfortunately, we did not get the chance to get primary research done as we were not sure which member of staff we should contact and get further information or any ideas regarding to the logo design, since our client did not have a specific preference towards their product, we had total freedom to design their logo our way.
What I learned about my audience
I targeted the logo toward college students, and have tried to make it more appealing towards them, typically 16-18 year olds. I have learned that my audience prefers aesthetically pleasing designs such as clean and stylish products. I have also learned that my audience prefers bright, saturated colors as it captures their attention the most, however, I did not use any bright or any saturated colors in my product because I've taken into consideration how the logo might look on the new Stanmore College buildings, and did not like how it looked, so I've made the colors less bright than what I have originally planned.
How my product meets audience expectations
I have learned about Gen Z and what they are interested in, and the main thing that always came up was the design of the logo. Gen Z likes aesthetically pleasing designs with the right amount of colors, not too much but not too little, thats why I have included 3 colors in my logo (light blue, white and red) along with the 3D effect on the logo to make it stand out. Gen Z does not like designs that have too much detail on them as they think that the company is trying to over compensate for something they lack, thats why I have made my logo simple, yet aesthetically pleasing to the Gen Z eye.
Improvements I have made along the way
I have originally planned on making the logo stand out even more with saturated colors such as the ones I used (bright green), but as I noticed that the design did not look the way I wanted it to look on the new Stanmore College buildings, I have changed the the colors to a much less saturated color (light blue) to suit the new Stanmore College buildings. I have also removed the green lines that went across the logo as I thought it had too much detail which ruined the simplicity of the logo, I have changed it to simple vertical lines that matched the logo while keeping the simplicity of the design.
Aspects I like about my product
I really like the 3D effect of the logo, it makes the design pop out. I also like the simplicity of the logo as it makes the logo look clean and professional, the colors that I used goes along with the design of the letters which is another aspect I love.
Skills I learned along the way
I have definitely learned more about Illustrator and how it works, especially after the hours of tutorials I have watched. I have also learned about Gen Z and their interests.
